The Origins of Our Collaborative Art
In the summer of 2020 Joaquin directed the designed and a public art experience. Our goals were to:

Foster community, connection and healing

Highlight stories aligned with Black joy, liberation and futures

Inspire more people to take action in support of a future where all people can flourish and be free
Over the two months that the Mosaic was built, community members celebrated the beauty of Black people, they expressed anger, they cried grief and they imagined what a world free of racism and police brutality would look like for all of us.

The Current Design
In 2020 organizations were scrambling to show their stance. Internal champions introduced us to leadership teams, but there was a problem. The central image was described as "angry" and "intense." So, we created a series of images and invited leaders to discuss how each image was an expression of love. And, we had them connect with there own experiences — when might someone mistake your care or love for something else? What makes it difficult to share what's on your mind? What would help you express yourself in those moments?
One of our adapted images — the one you connected with during our gathering — is the one we're using in our central effort to deliver 1 Million Mosaic Experiences by 2035.
